Well, you can, with additional gesture available to choose from.
There are several smart cover apps available on the Google Play that you can choose. Whether it only has smart cover functionality or additional gesture that you can choose.

The best smart cover apps that I've found is Proximity Screen Off. It come with two version; the lite and the pro. The lite version comes for free and the pro version cost $1.99.

 

I personally use the cover and hold gesture to turn the srceen off instead of using the flip cover mode. The reason I choose cover and hold is that it will keep the screen off even when the cover is open. Sometimes, if I was doing something with my phone (gaming, reading, etc), I like to leave my phone facing up with cover opened (or leave the phone on a stand/dock) to do something for a few minutes. I can just hover my hand over the proximity sensor for a few seconds to turn the screen off. The best with this gesture is I can also turn the screen off by just closing my cover.

Swipe once or twice gesture can easily trigger an accidental screen off while I'm using it. Swipe and hold or hold and swipe are to much hassle for me. The biggest letdown with these gestures is that they doesn't work with the flip cover.
